Conservation Paleobiology Workshop 2011

Researchers from around the world with diverse backgrounds in the geological and biological sciences convened in Ithaca, NY, on June 3-5, 2011, at the Paleontological Research Institution for a workshop on Conservation Paleobiology in the Coming Decades.

Participants included researchers working in near-time as well as deep-time, and traditional conservation biologists as well as paleobiologists.

The workshop was intended:

  1. To identify the "grand challenges in conservation paleobiology."
  2. To provide Sedimentary Geology and Paleobiology program officers at NSF with a concise, articulate vision for the promotion of this research area: A vision that will enable them to reach out to other programs and divisions for support.
  3. To identify the infrastructure needs and outreach efforts needed to make the approaches of conservation paleobiology more widespread and effective.
